A message to every working woman at Mansoura University
The beginning of the campaign for the early detection of Breast Diseases and Tumours in the faculties from 15/ 4/2013 to7/6/2013
* Do you know that
• Breast cancer among females is the most important and dangerous type of cancer. It is considered the commonest type not only in Egypt but in the whole world: one woman among eight is predisposed to breast cancer at one period of her life before the age of 80.
• The early detection and treatment of breast cancer usually results in complete recovery while late detection leads to the spread of the disease in such a rate as to become irrecoverable.
• Early detection of the disease occurs as a result of the awareness and complete knowledge of breast tumors and other similar breast problems as well as the means of prevention and early diagnosis.
*Because of the strong conviction of the Sector of Community Service and Environmental Development that prevention is better than cure; the General Administration of Environmental Projects in co-operation with the Faculty of Medicine intends to initiate a number of awareness raising sessions and examination clinics, for the early detection of breast tumors among the working women at Mansoura University.
Therefore you have to:
First, contact the Sector of Community Service and Environmental Development at your faculty to know the week assigned for your Faculty and the place of the sessions, the clinic, and the schedule. You also have to decide on an appointment for a free examination, in case you have a complaint.
Second, attend the orientation session on different breast diseases and problems that women are exposed to including breast cancer. The session will be held on a Monday at 10 o’clock on the date assigned for your faculty and will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Omar Farouk, Professor of Oncology in the Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University who will answer the attendants’ questions. This will be followed by distributing a handout including illustrations of the steps of self examination that should be performed by every woman (married or unmarried) starting from the age of twenty. All your queries concerning this topic will be answered, including the following questions:
• What is the incidence of breast cancer in Egypt?
• Do you know the risk factors for breast cancer?
• Do you know the procedures for self-examination, the early detection for breast cancer?
• Do you know how breast cancer is diagnosed? Do you know the importance of mammography and surgical biopsy as a means of diagnosis?
• What do you know about the different modalities of breast cancer treatment (Chemotherapeutic, hormonal, radiological, andlocal)?
• What do you know about onco- mamoplastic surgery?
• How do you deal with a breast cancer patient?
• What do you know about medical follow-up of breast cancer patients and about its cure rate?
• What do you know about benign breast tumors?
Third, in case there is a breast problem such as tumors, masses, secretions or pain, you have to go to the medical clinic at your faculty on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 11 o’clock to 1 o’clock during the week assigned for your faculty. You will be examined by Prof.Dr. Omar Farouk (Associate Professor of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University) who will attend to your complaints.
Fourth, in case a mammogram is needed, you will be referred to the radio-diagnostic department to have the investigations done.
