Seminar entitled “Nature-Based Solutions for Water, Climate Adaptation and Sustainable Development”, Sunday, May 19, 2024

On Sunday, May 19, 2024, a symposium was held at the Faculty of Engineering at Mansoura University, entitled “Nature-Based Solutions for Water, Climate Adaptation, and Sustainable Development,” where the vital role played by nature-based solutions and ecosystems in confronting environmental challenges was highlighted. Experts addressed the importance of nature-based solutions (NBS) in enhancing water management, building climate resilience, and achieving sustainable development, especially in Egypt. The symposium emphasized the urgent need to adopt innovative and sustainable approaches to water and natural resource management in light of climate change and rapid urbanization.
The importance of nature-based solutions in Egypt:
Water Management: Nature-based solutions, such as wetland restoration and sustainable agricultural practices, are essential to improving water quality and availability in Egypt, which suffers from water scarcity.
Climate resilience: Reforestation and mangrove restoration projects can contribute to protecting coastal areas from erosion and weather disasters, enhancing Egypt’s resilience to climate change.
Urban Planning: Integrating green infrastructure into urban areas can reduce the impact of temperatures, reduce flooding, and improve air quality, contributing to the creation of healthier and more sustainable cities.
Dr. Hassan Abu Al-Naga’s statements during the symposium:
“The future of engineering lies in our ability to reconcile technological advances with the wisdom of natural systems. Engineers must be at the forefront of adopting nature-based solutions to create sustainable and resilient infrastructures.”
“As engineers, we are at the forefront of a pivotal transformation. By embracing nature-based solutions, we are not only addressing environmental challenges, but also paving the way toward a new republic and a sustainable, prosperous future.”
“In the context of Egypt, where water scarcity and climate change pose significant threats, nature-based solutions offer a promising path for the future. Our engineers must be equipped with the knowledge and tools to effectively implement these innovative solutions.”
“Egypt has taken the lead in promoting nature-based solutions not only as a means to combat climate change, but also as a pillar for achieving sustainable development.”
“We need to adopt a holistic approach that integrates nature-based solutions into every aspect of planning and development. We must all work together to ensure a sustainable future for all.”
“The role played by Egypt at COP27 reflects our firm commitment to sustainability and innovation in confronting environmental challenges. We recognize that nature-based solutions are an essential part of sustainable solutions.”
