An awareness symposium within the framework of the activities celebrating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women at the College of Medicine

Within the framework of the cooperation protocol between the Health Directorate in Dakahlia and Mansoura University. The Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at the College of Medicine, in cooperation with the Hospitals and Medical Centers Sector and the Safe Women Unit, organized an awareness-raising symposium within the framework of the activities celebrating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

In the beginning, Prof. Nisreen Omar, former dean of the college, explained that the idea of establishing the unit began in 2016 as part of the state’s strategy to empower women and in cooperation with the National Council for Women. A number of workshops were held to train medical and administrative staff before opening the clinic in 2020. Ed El-Shaarawy Kamal also explained the role of the hospital sector in supporting the Safe Women’s Clinic at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Center and overcoming all obstacles to reach the best medical service for women who have been exposed to violence.
The symposium addressed the work and role of women’s security units in combating violence against women. Dr. Iman Salama gave a lecture on defining gender-based violence, and Dr. Fatima Abdel Rahman continued the talk about statistics on violence against women and the efforts of the Ministry of Health to establish clinics for safe women. Ed Sahar Al-Dakrawi also presented the role of forensic medicine in the forensic medical examination of abused women and documenting physical and sexual violence with forensic medical reports, the necessary analyses, the referral system, and the safety plan. In conclusion, Ed. Hiam Fathi spoke about the role of psychiatry in supporting abused women who visit the Safe Women’s Clinic.
